Assignment 2: On your own
This is it! This is the last piece of the reading comprehension puzzle.
Now that you have sharpened your Reading Comprehension Skills, now that you have learned and practiced a Reading Strategy- SQ3R- that focuses those skills, you are ready to drive on your own.
To get you started, please perform all the steps to the SQ3R process with the document "Humanity on the Record" following this sequence of instructions. Best Wishes! After this assignment, you have completed the course and are ready to tackle your college classroom reading assignments. Work Hard!
- Open the document "Humanity on the Record" and Perform a short SQ3R Survey of the text. If you do not remember the survey activities, close the document and quickly review the "SQ3R Survey" power point and try again. When you finish the survey (should take no longer than five minutes) open Practice Quiz: SQ3R and answer the survey question.
- Return to the "Humanity on the Record" document. Without reading the text yet (this is still the Pre-Read Stage) develop three questions that you hope to have answered in the essay. Return to Practice Quiz: SQ3R and jot your three questions in the text box for the second item.
- Return again to the "Humanity on the Record" document. You are ready for the During Reading Stage. Break the text into three segments of one page each. Read the first segment (first page) paragraph by paragraph circling any word you do not understand. As you finish the segment, figure out the gist (approximate definition) of any words that are unfamiliar to you. When you finish the first segment, return to the beginning of the segment and highlight/ underline the Topic Sentence in each paragraph. Next highlight or underline the Major Support Details. (If you have two colors of highlighters, that's perfect!) When finished with identifying main ideas and major support details, continue reading into the second segment with the same steps. Continue the During Reading steps until finished with the entire essay.
- When you have finished reading and highlighting the essay, do a brief Recall-Review. Look at your main idea highlights one by one and try to recall (aloud, of course!) the support details without looking. If you get stuck, do a quick skim read to refresh the information.
- Finally, return to the Practice Quiz:SQ3R and do the last question as a After Reading SQ3R Review step.
